Aquatic Panorama of Kerala

Associated with Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala is the season of water festivals at south Kerala’s back waters, in kuttanad. The Vallamkali (boat race), held mainly in some places in the erstwhile Travancore state (Southern part of Kerala), from July to September, are spectacular pageants. These carnivals are unique and are deep rooted in the region’s history and culture. Vallamkali is best seen at Alappuzha, Aranmula, Neerettupuram, Champakulam, Payippadu and Kottayam.

About a hundred oarsmen row huge and graceful Odee (boats), Oars dip and flash to the rhythm of drums and cymbals in each boat. The songs are typical in character and concern people in Malabar.

Over each boat gleam scarlet silk umbrellas: their number denotes the affluence of the family owning the boat. Gold coins and tassels hang from these umbrellas.

The low-lying Kuttanad, also known as the rice bowl of Kerala, where the carnivals are held annually, was once contemporaneously under three local chieftains, whose naval fleets used to be their only means of communication and defense. Display of fleets, consisting of different types of boats noted for their enthusiasm and maneuverability was a historical necessity in the days of yore. This display took place in connection with temple festivals.

Boats (Vallam) were the only means of travel for people living in hundreds of islets in Kuttanad and, it is but natural that their grandest celebration is one involving boats. The boats no longer play the role of fighters; they now display their tremendous for load and speed. Once they were designed to travel fast and carry soldiers. The largest of such boats is the ‘snake boats or “Chundan Vallom”. It was designed, for the first time, in the 16th century for the king of Chempakasseri to fight the neighboring Kayamkulam King. Narayanan Achari of Koduppunna had designed these boats. The enemy king, who suffered at the hands of Chempakasseri, later found that the snake boats helped his opponents. He promptly got a similar one designed by some master builder. The difference in his boats was that every time a soldier fired from them, they moved backward. Such was the craftsmanship of the makers of the boat. In ancient form the snake boat is similar to the Norwegian boats designed in the ninth century.

Since the naval fleets were relegated to history, villages in Kuttanad took pride in organizing festivals and competitions of snake boats. In 1952, when the Prime Minister, late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru visited Kerala, he traveled from Allepey to Kottayam by boat. A race was arranged in the backwaters—of Punnamada Lake near Alappuzha for him. Nehru got so excited while witnessing the event; he jumped into a boat to join the rowers. When he reached Delhi he presented a trophy, modeled as a snake boat (Chundan Vallam), to the winner of the competition.  Thereafter it is known as “Nehru Trophy Boat Race” and it became more popular Vallam Kali in these seasons.

These boat races have won international acclaim and recognition within the country too. Men from all religion and sects participate in these races. Each boat, nearly 30 meters long, is occupied by100 people. The Nehru Trophy race attracts people from all over the world. The largest numbers of entries are for snake boat races which, with their beak-like bows, high flared sterns, glided conical lip and high (4 mtr) tails, accommodate four who steer..

Only big businesspeople can own a snake boat, which, 16 yrs back, costed around Rs. One Lac. It takes at least six months for a master builder to construct the boat. The entire process with an Anjili tree for the keel, and hard cast iron rivets for holding the hull, is done on eye estimate and the technique is handed down from one generation to another by word of mouth.  The sides of the boat are smeared with sardine oil; the first launching is done ceremoniously.  All the men of the community push the boat into water.  The paddlers move quickly into position and then set the speed of the boat, keeping perfect time.  The steerers are spaced evenly along the centre of the boat.  They paddled to the accompaniment of whistles, drums and other sounds.  There are a large number of songs in Malayalam, language and the steerers often row in time to these.  That branch of Malayalam literature is called “Vanchipaatt” or Boat Song.

Snake boats are the main attraction of the races at Alleppey but there are a variety of other boats, all of which attain considerable speed “Churulan Vallam” (spiraled boats) are household boats named after the soirals carved on their bows and sterns; “Parunthuvallans” are eagle-tailed, “ Veppu Vallam” are vessels used in the armadas of kings. The other variety is called ‘Kochu Vallam’ means small boats, which can only accommodate one or two persons.

Among the races connected with temples, the earliest one is at Champakulam.  It is believed to have begun during the 7th century.  The procession of boats starts from the Christina family of Mappillasseri kadavu at Champakulam a few kilometers away from Alleppey.  The legend revolves round the robbery of a Krishna idol, which was to be installed at the Ambalapuzha temple.  It is said that, in the early morning, the idol stolen from Karikkulam temple in Chempakasseri kingdom, reached Champakulam, from where it was joyously carried to Ammbalapuzha for consecration at the scheduled time.  It is to commemorate this event that the Champakulam races are held annually in July.

The Parthasarathy temple at Aranmula is ancient and noted for its murals and architecture.  The temple is believed to be one among the five Shri Krishna temples built by the Pandavas.  At Aranmula there was a custom of carrying articles from the neighboring Namboothiri household for the Onam feast to be held at the temple.  The special boat called “Thiruvonathoni” (the holy Onam boat) used to be accompanied by a large number of boats belonging to the Parthasarathy temple.  This race was later held on the birthday of the Arnamula deity on the next day of the Onam festival.  It is also the last race to be held during the season.  Colorful umbrellas are an added attraction of the pageantry here.

Barring the Nehru trophy race at Alleppy other races which are still more colorful and traditional are little known to the outside world.  They are ‘Aranmula Uthrattadi Vallamkali’ at Aranmula in Pathanamthitta District, Champakulam Moolam Boat Race, in Alleppuzha District, Payippadu Jalotsavam—one of the oldest boat races in Allappuzha, Kumarakam Boat Race  near Kottayam, and Indira Gandhi Boat Race at Ernakulam District.

These boat races are unique in the world.  The tourist potential of these boat races is yet to be exploited.

It is high time that plans are drafted to exploit the tourist potential inherent in their cultural practices. END

Our Existence Depends on Trees.

We celebrated yet another environment day in the recent past with lot of fervor and activities. News papers the world over published environment related articles and photographs.  Some of the articles were so informative and educative.

To put some extra caution about the coming peril, the alarming global warming, I alerted my friends and relatives about the contents in some of the news papers on this serious issue. That information was really a timely alert and reminder to all, and many appreciated my concern for the fellow beings.

If we continue the present life style, no doubt we will be caught up in this peril. It is upsetting news that cars, aircrafts, air conditioners, bulbs etc… and the way of life that causes the global warming. If we go at this rate the level increases and it will definitely be a great threat to the earth’s species as well as human.

Another report says that “the world has just 10 years to reverse surging greenhouse gas emissions or risk runaway climate change that could make many part of the planet uninhabitable.” This is a great warning from the scientist world.  They conclude that unless mankind rapidly stabilizes green house gas emissions and start reducing them, it will have little chance of keeping global warming within manageable limits.  The result could be a great destruction.

The present alarming high rate of oil addiction is yet another great threat.    It is high time that we need to think seriously for a Great New Deal, that we must start the action needed to reduce green house gas emission before we end up in disaster.  We have to seriously consider our present way of functioning and to do something solid to curtail the global warming.

The trees are an integral part of human race.  The benefits we receive from a tree are many.  It has been estimated that a palm tree is useful to man in more than 250 things.  It is also estimated that an ordinary tree inhales approximately 14,000 liters of carbon dioxide, and exhales double the quantity of oxygen for human consumption and survival.

Tree absorb water from the ground, and then through transpiration, transmit this water to air as water vapor.  Thus, they help maintain the atmospheric equilibrium.  Sad to say, these days even the civic authorities are cutting down trees in the name of development.  But unfortunately, many do not know the consequences they are causing due to their negligent activities.  The massacre of trees means putting an axe to the very existence of human race.  No doubt, the continuous felling of trees will cause irreparable damage to the already perishing flora and fauna of our country.  The need of the hour is to carefully plan and felling of trees.  I take this opportunity to appreciate TOI’s initiative to alert the general public about the irreparable damages caused by the civic authorities in twin cities through its pages.

“The truth is that it is more profitable to leave a tree standing than fell it.”  A recent study says that there is a direct loss of over Rupees fifty thousand per year for each tree that is cut.  It is estimated that one tree yields oxygen worth thirty thousand rupees.  If we fell trees at the current alarming rate, soon we need to install oxygen manufacturing units in every corner of the country. That may be a big deal and no government can afford such a project. A tree  performs many activities like, preventing soil erosion, providing shade, food, fruits and of course, fuel (provided by the dead branches and manure made of decomposed leaves).  In short, the cost of replacing a single felled tree proves very expensive.  Just calculate the price of the several thousands of trees all over the world.

Let us have a look at the religious texts in this connection.  The Bible, says, after the creation of man, Lord God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; and to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to every thing that moves on the earth which has life, I have given every green plant for food”. (Genesis 1:28-29).  “He planted a garden toward the east, in Eden; and there He placed the man whom He had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God caused to grow every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:8-9).

In the Bhagavath Gita, it is mentioned that “A tree’s leaves, flowers, fruits, shades, roots, skin wood, pulp even the charcoal, everything it gives to the human for their use.  In short whatever they have they gave it for others and they live a selfless life.  How precious and satisfied are their lives”.

In the Padmapuranam we read, “The one who plant a tree on the wayside is a blessed man.  He receives the blessings from heaven as long as it bears flowers, leaves and fruits”.

Poet Kabir wrote “Trees’ lives a sacrificial life, the soul body and everything they have they gives to others with a sacrificial mind.  They are the real munificent, they are the great benevolence.  The one who do service to such trees they receives God’s blessings”.

President Roosevelt said, “How sad it will be a childless life.  A nation without enough trees and greeneries are also like a childless couple.

Pandit Nehru said, “Planting plants and trees and meeting its needs shows a nation’s welfare and wealthiness”.

Goutam Buddha said, “Trees are the best examples of selfless service.  For their existence they never demand anything from anybody, instead they provide many good things for the welfare of the people.  Even the person who put his axe on its bottom, it gives them shadow till its fall.

Another famous Malayalam poet wrote:

“The one who pour water with a loving heart to the Banyan plant,

When it grows it gives shadow to everyone who passes by”.

The tree and its existence was part and parcel of human race from the very beginning.  It was so closely connected with human beings.

Let the people who mercilessly cut the trees make note that the great danger they are causing, and let them plant yet another sapling in its place.  Planting of sapling through school and college level will make a big difference to this serious threat. Kerala government’s recently introduced venture of “Entee Maram Paddhathi” “My Tree Scheme” is a great success.  All its counterpart should follow suit to make awareness among school and college children. For planting saplings at every space available. Let us make awareness programs in school and university levels. END

No crosses allowed at Penn State U – even if they’re imaginary

Posted: 28 Oct 2009 12:33 PM PDT

Penn State University is all abuzz with complaints…or should we say six complaints out of thousands of students…about a new school T-shirt design that resembles a cross.

There is no cross. The T-shirt, which is intended to advertise the football team’s annual “White Out” game, does not bear a cross. A few students who are offended by any hint of the Bible choose to see a cross in the t-bar shaped design. And because of one student letter, the Anti-Defamation League’s Philadelphia office is now involved. Readers can see a photo of the imaginary cross T-shirt here at a FOX News story.

This makes PSU the latest school with a broo-ha-ha over the imagined “separation of church and state” (see the Underground’s previous article about cheerleaders’ posters in Georgia).

Many other Penn State students have voiced their opinion to the school newspaper, The Daily Collegian, stating they are “OK” with the design; and 30,000 T-shirts have been sold so far. The design was intended to resemble the blue stripe on the football helmets.

According to the FOX story, the school bookstore has no plans to remove the T-shirts from its shelves. That is, probably until the school gets slapped with a lawsuit by the ADL or the ACLU on behalf of the six students who feel they are being “defamed.”

“There must be a separation,” one student who didn’t buy the T-shirt told FOX. The FOX reporter might have done well to ask her to point out the phrase “separation of church and state” in the First Amendment. It isn’t there.

On the other hand, an Eastern Asian studies student told the school paper the whole thing is ridiculous, and that if you look hard enough, you can see crosses in many other designs around the school.

Frankly, this reporter/editorialist thinks it would be wonderful if people started at least seeing God, if not Jesus, in more places. We can’t keep catering to the few who are “offended” by taking away the rights of the thousands who are not. Unless, of course, it really is the end times and unbelievers must be left to their own defenses against spiritual darkness.

“Blessed are you when people insult you, peresecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven  Matthew 5:11-12a (NIV)

Four Ways God Communicates with Us

theundergroundsite:

http://theundergroundsite.com/index.php/2009/10/four-ways-god-communicates-with-us/

Posted: 28 Oct 2009 11:44 PM PDT

Are you expecting a phone call from God today?

Are you expecting a phone call from God today?

I was once told by a close friend that God had stopped speaking to him. You see, my friend was struggling through some rather difficult decisions in his life and desperately needed to seek the guidance, counsel and wisdom of the Lord. However, after months of consistent, persistent prayer, he became convinced that God’s voice was nowhere to be found. Unfortunately, this is rarely, if ever, the case.

All too often in our Christian walks, we become fixated on how we talk to God. We pray, we worship and we sit through long church service sermons. But when was the last time you paused to consider the reverse? How does God speak to you? What would He do if He really needed to get your attention? Would you know what to look for? No doubt the vast majority of Christian men and women would prefer to hear a booming, thunderous voice from the Heavens spewing out all manner of grand insight and infinite wisdom. However, a little Biblical clarity may help to shine some light on this oft-debated issue.

1. God Speaks to Us through the Bible and the Holy Spirit.

If you’ve been in church circles long enough, you’ve likely had these two truths preached at you until you could no longer stand it. However, their importance and reliability must not be overlooked. The accuracy and dependability of Scriptural truths in your life is crucial to your ability to hear the voice of God and, subsequently, His will and direction for your life.

“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” (1 Timothy 3:16, NASU, emphasis added). You can be certain the Bible is the literal, inerrant Word and voice of God. In fact, the Greek here literally refers to Scripture as having been “breathed out” by God. Trust it, listen to it.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you,” (John 14:26, Jesus speaking to His disciples). The Holy Spirit is our literal guide to understanding Scriptural truths, principles and perplexing life circumstances.

2. God Communicates to us through the Person of Jesus Christ: see John 1

John often refers to Jesus as “the Word made flesh” who “dwelt among us.” You see, Jesus was literally Scripture with skin on, walking around in the flesh among ordinary human beings. His life and sacrificial death bridged the gap between us and a just, holy God. Because of Jesus, we now have access to the very throne of God and can communicate with Him at any time and Him with us.

3. God Communicates to us through our Christian Brothers & Sisters

This may be one of the most difficult to grapple with. However, it is one of the most important reasons for regular church attendance and strong accountability. No one is meant to walk the Christian life alone. God wired us for relationships and human connection.

Remember the words of the writer of Hebrews: “Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another all the more…” (Hebrews 10:23-25, NASU, emphases added).

Oftentimes God will speak to you through a fellow believer or close friend. It may not always be what you want to hear. But if it is from God, it will always be the truth. You may be more inclined to listen to the wisdom of a close friend than to sit down and dig into your Bible.

4. God Communicates to us through our Circumstances

This one comes with a warning. Although it is true that God can and does allow us to endure specific circumstances to communicate His will and plan for our lives, we must simultaneously be wary not to judge the nature, character or voice of God based solely on our surroundings. Remember that we endure trials and tribulations for a reason. For more on this see my article “Four Reasons We Endure Suffering.”

If you’re struggling to hear the voice of God today, take heart! You are not alone. Even the strongest of Christian men and women often find it difficult to discern what God may or may not being saying to them. Take hold of your Bible, listen for the voice of the Holy Spirit and rely on the strong Christian brothers and sisters God has surrounded you with. Don’t give up on hearing from Him just yet. He may be waiting to tell you the best news of your life!

LGBT Hate Crimes Bill Signed into Law, Conservatives Still Wary

Posted: 29 Oct 2009 02:59 PM PDT

How will this new law affect the future of gay rights & Christian free speech?

How will this new law affect the future of gay rights & Christian free speech?

In a bold political move and statement, President Barack Obama officially signed into the law on Wednesday the first Hate Crimes Bill which will grant specific protection to the gay, lesbian, transgendered and homosexual demographics, according to several national news media outlets. The Matthew Shepherd and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, as it had been titled while still in the Senate, was a small piece of a large $680 billion defense spending agenda. For more on this, see my piece: U.S. Senate Passes LGBT Hate Crimes Bill 68-29.

Since its origins within the U.S. Senate, countless conservative Christian groups, churches, organizations and pastors have voiced their concerns over the bill’s likelihood to subsequently stifle their free speech rights to oppose homosexuality.

Dr. Gerald B. Kieschnick, president of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod—told the Christian Post, “Although we don’t know the full ramifications of this bill as of yet, my staff and I will be watching closely for any possible infringement on the rights of our members and pastors to speak out against the sin of homosexuality based on the Word of God.”

During his official remarks at the reception ceremony, President Obama spoke of hate crime’s abilities to “break spirits” and “instill fear”, in addition to the physical harm associated with such violent acts. Obama also noted, “No one in America should ever be afraid to walk down the street holding the hands of the person they love,” according to FOX News Contributing Editor Anne Marie Riha of the Fox News’ White House View.

To the thunderous applause of Shepherd’s and Byrd’s family members and countless Associated Press members and TV camera crews, Obama stated that the signing of the law was “the culmination of a struggle that has lasted more than a decade” and “another step forward” in creating a more perfect union.

In his recent annual address to the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest advocate for the equal rights of gays, Obama noted that there are still changes to be made: “Despite the progress we’ve made, there are still laws to change and hearts to open. This fight continues now and I’m here with the simple message: I’m here with you in that right,” according to CNN.

Although U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has previously attempted to assure conservatives and Christian/religious pastors and speakers that the bill will in no way infringe upon free speech rights, the vast majority are still wary of its future ramifications.

Thanksgiving – why bother?

theundergroundsite:

http://theundergroundsite.com/index.php/2009/10/thanksgiving-why-bother/

Posted: 31 Oct 2009 12:32 PM PDT

Including public prayers to God on Thanksgiving is becoming as “politically incorrect” as mentioning Christ on Christmas.

In 2005, the Maryland Board of Education began teaching their students that the Pilgrims landed on the American continent by luck. In the new public school curriculum, in effect re-naming Thanksgiving “Lucky Thursday” per some sources, students are not taught that God had any part in the thank you for what the Pilgrims had. The Board of Education felt they were facing a constitutional dilemma.

By contrast, we have discovered documented statements like this one by Edward Winslow at the first recorded Thanksgiving, 1621 (bolding mine):
“…many of the Indians coming amongst us, and amongst the rest their greatest king Massasoyt, with some ninetie men, whom for three dayes we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five Deere, which they brought to the Plantation and bestowed on our Governour, and upon the Captaine and others. And although it be not always so plentifull, as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so farre from want, that we often wish you partakers of our plentie.”

And here is George Washington’s first Thanksgiving Proclamation on November 26, 1789:
“It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor.”

We aren’t sure that the First Thanksgiving took place on the last Thursday in November, and God didn’t declare Thanksgiving a holiday. Of course, the Bible makes no mention of it (nor of Christmas). The New Testament sets only two covenants before us: The Lord’s Supper and the Ordinance of Baptism.

Thanksgiving wasn’t even declared a National Holiday until President Franklin D. Roosevelt made the decision in 1939 (approved by Congress in 1941); and not every President between Washington and Roosevelt prayed thanks to God on that day.

But isn’t it still OK to thank God? “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4: 6-7, NIV). Our American Thanksgiving holiday is just as good a day as any to do so.

Heaven forbid, one day in our American households on Thanksgiving, a knock will come at the door and a U.S. Government official will demand a place at the table to be sure we don’t issue thanks to God for what we have.
